Artist Information:
Benny Golson - Tenor Saxophonist
Multitalented and internationally famous jazz legend, - a composer, arranger, lyricist, producer - and tenor saxophonist of world note. Raised with an impeccable musical pedigree, Golson has played in the bands of world famous Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic and Art Blakey. Few jazz musicians can claim to be true innovators and even fewer can boast of a performing and recording career that literally redefines the term "jazz".
Rio Clemente "The bishop of Jazz" - Master Jazz Pianist
Anyone who has listened to Rio Clemente play piano, comes away in awe. This master pianist mixes a strong classical background with rich knowledge of jazz history, then adds an amazing sense of creativity and interpretation. The result is music that is different from others, and nearly always produces a standing ovation and cries for “more.” When reviewers stumble for words to describe his work, it’s because words fail to convey the rich depth of character, nimble facility of play and ease with which his music is crafted and performed. The man brings something very special and decidedly unequaled to the piano.
Vitali Imereli - Jazz Violinist
Vitali Imereli is one of the finest jazz violinists in the world. Born in Kutaisi, Georgia, Vitali Imereli began playing violin as a talented five-year-old at a music school, later completing his education in 1979 at the National Music Academy in Tbilisi. During the period 1979-85, Vitali taught violin at the Tbilisi Academy of Music. Since1978 he has performed at jazz festivals throughout the world, In 1992, Vitali moved to Finland. he has made severalTV appearances and been a featured guest on radio. Vitali has played at the internationally renowned Pori Jazz Festival every year since 1991. May 1996 saw the release of his new album "Tribute to Staphane Grappelli". In May and June of this year Vitali was on tour with Rosenberg Trio performing in Turku and Helsinki, then continuing on to the Kajaani, Alandia and Pori Jazz Festivals. Later in July he enjoyed successful performances with Didier Lockwood and Rosenberg Trio in a Tribute to Stephane Grappelli at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Vitali has also played with Jack Hana, Art Blakey, Michael Urbaniak, Rosenberg Trio, Ulf Johansson, Bob Gulloti, Gipsy Kids, Daniel Walsh, Carlos Del Puerto, Didier Lockwood, Enrico Granafei and many more internationally acclaimed musicians. “Vitali Imereli masters the Grappelli (Stephane Grappelli) sound to the extent even the Maestro himself couldn’t tell who was playing. This Georgian-born violinist masters the modern styles as well.”
Rick Crane - Jazz Bassist
Rick Crane was born in Essex County New Jersey, a few miles outside of
New York City, where he still resides. Being raised in close proximity
to the Jazz Capital of the World has been beneficial to his musical
career. He started taking guitar lessons at age eleven and then bass
guitar lessons at age fourteen. Even at this early age he was always
involved in various musical groups playing the music of the sixties and
seventies. At age sixteen he was introduced to his first jazz record
through his brother. It was a quartet album by guitarist Joe Pass.
Shortly after, he was seeking out local musicians from neighboring towns
and formed a jazz group. It was during this time that he started
playing the double bass.
At age eighteen he started studying privately with bassist Michael Moore
in Manhattan. After receiving an associate’s degree in business while
doing gigs at night Rick decided to enroll at William Paterson
University in the Jazz Studies program. These were his most formative
years. The jazz department was headed by trumpeter Thad Jones and
shortly after, bassist Rufus Reid. While continuing his private
instruction with Moore and having the guidance of Reid on campus, he
found himself in the perfect environment to grow as a bassist. He was
asked to play in rhythm sections backing visiting featured jazz greats
such as Dave Liebman, Jackie Byard, Bucky Pizzarelli and Joanne
Brackeen. In his senior year he was selected to perform at the Music
Educators National Conference in Miami Florida along with fellow
classmate saxophonist Bill Evans. In 1980 he graduated WPU with a
Bachelor of Arts degree as a performance major on the double bass.
After completing school, Rick’s professional career soon took off. He
became one of the most sought after bass players in the metropolitan
area. He held a five-year Monday night trio gig with long time friend
guitarist Vic Juris and the late drummer Ron Davis. As Rick’s career
continued to develop he performed in clubs, concerts, jazz festivals and
recording studios nationally and internationally with some of the top
jazz artists on the scene.
Steve Johns - Drummer
Steve Johns is one of the most dynamic and versatile drummers on both
the New York City and international Jazz scenes. Since the early 1980's
he has performed and recorded with virtually the "Who's Who" of the Jazz
World. Steve has played with The Sonny Fortune Quartet, The Benny
Carter Quartet, The Billy Taylor Trio, Nat Adderley, Stanley
Turrentine, Jimmy Heath, The Randy Brecker Quintet, Jesseye Norman, Dave
Liebman, The Ronnie Cuber Band and many others.
