Rio Clemente presents the ImpresaRio Series - Holiday Concert and Benefit Concert - Sunday, December 15th 2013

Rio Clemente presents the ImpresaRio Series - Holiday Concert and Benefit Concert - Featuring Special Guests

Sunday, December 15th 2013
Ticket Price: $25.00
Wine and Cheese Hour 6:00PM
Performance 7:00PM

This special concert will feature renowned Jazz Pianist Rio Clemente, "The Bishop Of Jazz" and other Special Guests playing some of your favorite Christmas and Holiday classics.

Artist Information:

Rio Clemente "The bishop of Jazz" - Master Jazz Pianist
Anyone who has listened to Rio Clemente play piano, comes away in awe. This master pianist mixes a strong classical background with rich knowledge of jazz history, then adds an amazing sense of creativity and interpretation. The result is music that is different from others, and nearly always produces a standing ovation and cries for “more.” When reviewers stumble for words to describe his work, it’s because words fail to convey the rich depth of character, nimble facility of play and ease with which his music is crafted and performed. The man brings something very special and decidedly unequaled to the piano.

Ben Newman - The Music Den's Teacher Of The Month for November 2013

Announcing The Music Den's Teacher Of The Month
for November 2013 - Ben Newman

At The Music Den, we are proud of our teachers and their accomplishments. We want you to know a little about them so we are featuring one teacher each month. Congratulations to Ben Newman, our November 2013 featured "Teacher of the Month"

Ben Newman has been teaching at The Music Den for over 5 years and is a valued member of our team. He is a true professional in every sense of the word. Ben is well versed in Guitar, but also teaches Piano, Ukulele, Bass, and Banjo

Ben is a skilled guitar teacher, providing his students with a gentle spirit and nurturing presence. His philosophy is to tailor each lesson to the student's individual needs - employing sight reading, music theory, fret board theory, chord reading, and tablature reading

What makes Ben unique is his ability to shift his teaching style to accommodate both children and adults. His technique is tailored to the student needs. If he is teaching an adult, he focuses on a more mature approach to the guitar with an encouraging push to transition nervous energy into a smooth, easy style of learning. With children, he is gentle, funny, and witty, and relates to their desires and song choices.

Playing for over 12 years, Ben performs in a small duo with Justin DiRicco in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Often joined by other prominent players performing at local venues, Ben and Justin write much of their own music. His interests are Rock-based with influence from Blues, Jazz, and Classical genres. His influences are Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Tool, and Rage Against the Machine.

Ben is a also graduate of the County College of Morris and continues to pursue his Bachelors in Music Education at William Paterson University.

Besides private music instruction, Ben also offers a group guitar class for children ages 7-10 on Saturdays from 2 - 3 PM.

Open Letter From Angela Marcone - The Music Den's Education Coordinator

Open Letter From Angela Marcone - The Music Den's Education Coordinator

Dear Parents and Students of the Music Den Family,

In the short time that I have joined the team as Education Coordinator at The Music Den I have experienced a wonderful world of music making with both the teachers and the students who enter our store. I am amazed at the enthusiasm of the teachers and the skills they have to offer and at the warm and friendly atmosphere created by the staff and owners Tom and Jerry Scognamiglio.

My background in teaching spans from being a software specialist for 12 years, writing and teaching software curriculum for adult education, writing and teaching curriculum in K-12 public education for 7 years, training in vocal pedagogy, teaching private vocal lessons, and owning my own studio with a staff of 5. I hold a Masters in Music Education from Boston University. Now I have aligned myself for the final stop on my career trail by becoming an adjunct professor at William Paterson and sharing this wonderful space with the personnel here at The Music Den as Education Coordinator.

Working closely with Tom, Jerry, and the teachers over the past 8 months, we have evaluated teaching strategies and curriculum, researched other facilities offering music lessons and programs and aligned our goals to provide a comprehensive musical experience for students who study with us.

The one thing that sets us apart from other facilities offering lessons in the area is our beautiful RPAC (Randolph Performing Arts Center) performance space. A 118 seat intimate stage and state of the art recording facility complete with lighting and a beautiful grand piano provides the students the opportunity to hone their skills out of the practice room.

We offer monthly recitals and performance opportunities for each student as they progress through their training.

This year, we are proud to announce that we have put both String and Wind chamber ensemble programs into place for students and the community to join as they reach performance level. I anticipate these programs becoming staple ensembles valuable to the community for years to come.

Along with these opportunities, we now have group lessons and classes for children and adults including:

-Kids Keys ages 3-6, for children just beginning to show an interest in the piano
-Kids Guitar for children ages 7-11 who would like the experience of playing guitar before taking private lessons
-Rock Band for ages 13 to adult for those studying guitar, bass, piano, and drums who would like to experience playing in an ensemble
-Pop and Instrumental groups for children grades 1-8 who would like to perform on stage singing and playing popular music
-Ukulele classes ages 13 to adult for those who would like to jump into the hot new trend of ukulele performing
-Mrdangam drumming for a cultural world drumming experience,
-Acting classes with filmmaking, Broadway and stage performance
-Music theory classes for college bound students

…and we just successfully completed our first ever Summer Fine Arts Camp!

When I first arrived to The Music Den, I was inspired by the incredible opportunities abound to create and make music for the community.

In January we are bringing a certified Music Therapist to the mix offering one-on-one lessons and classes in Sprouting Melodies, a nationally known parent-child class for beginner musicians. (children from infancy to 3 yrs.)

I invite you to join us as we grow and to partake in the new offerings we now have at The Music Den.

Check our website at www.TheMusicDen.com for all of the offerings I described above.

If you were a previous student and are considering returning to The Music Den, I am extending the offer free registration to any of our class offerings.

I also invite you to check our website for the RPAC performances and join us for some of the upcoming events.

Thank you for becoming a part of The Music Den Family!

Respectfully,

Angela Marcone
Education Coordinator

Entrance To The Randolph Store Made Safer - The Music Den

Entrance to the Randolph Store Made Safer

We are happy to announce that today the NJDOT came by and has cleared back the roadside vegetation up to 20ft from the road, just before the store entrance of our The Music Den store in Randolph, NJ on Route 10.

If you've visited our Randolph store before, you know that the entrance was hidden from view and would come upon you suddenly if you were not aware that it was there. This fact caused several accidents, primarily with people striking the curb with their tires because they missed the entrance.

We are thankful that the NJDOT has resolved this issue, and that our store entrance is now safer for all the customers who come to shop, and all of the families that attend lessons there.

Thank you NJDOT!

This Saturday, May 18th, 2013 at 8:00PM, we have a very special Cabaret Performance, Julie Mac performing "As I Am". Live at the Randolph Performing Arts Center at The Music Den.

Julie Mac - As I Am - Cabaret Performance
Saturday, May 18th, 2013 at 8:00PM
Where: The Randolph Performing Arts Center at The Music Den
Tickets: $20.00

Artist Information:
"As I Am”, is much more than a show, it is an experience. Come with an open heart and mind, leave with a little magic!

There came a time in my life that I stopped singing almost completely. I became so afraid of not being perfect and of being judged, that I wouldn’t sing in front of anyone…not even myself.

One day I put on my “big girl panties” and started a journey. I went to retreats. I found mentors. Sometimes I struggled, sometimes I soared. I listened. I found something that I cannot live without. I found myself.

My joy is to share what I have learned. If I could, I would wrap it up with a bow and gift it to each of you.”
-Julie Mac

“Julie Mac’s voice and her ability to tell a story through song, connect her audience with their own feelings about life and love in that special way that only the great singers and performers can do. If you have a chance to see her perform – take it!!" - Phil E.

“Julie has a natural stage presence that envelops her audience in the warmth of her personality, and a voice that is as pure as freshly fallen snow. She blends these two things together with a wonderful sense of humor, and is not afraid to poke fun at herself as she tells her life story through song and words. You wish the show would go on and on." - Alan M.

A Message from Sandy Rosenfield (Taken from Sing A Rainbow's Website)

Dear Friends,
Here we are once again, getting ready for the 3rd Annual Sing A Rainbow Concert. For three years now, my friends and I have committed to raising funds for the American Cancer Society. This year, Sing a Rainbow will be Saturday, May 4th at the Randolph Performing Arts Center located at the Music Den, Rt 10 West in Randolph, New Jersey. Over the past two years, we raised more than $5,000.00 and all proceeds went to the American Cancer Society.

If you've been to this site before, you know that I am a breast cancer survivor. I am currently celebrating twelve years of good health. This year's message is a thank you to those who have helped me to achieve this survivorship.

I owe many thanks to so many. I extend my thanks to the American Cancer Society, as a source of education, research and support to medical professionals, institutions, cancer patients, their families, caretakers and supporters on a worldwide basis. I thank my doctors, Dr. Mohan Sehdev, surgeon, Dr. Meryl Ram, oncologist, and Dr. Alan Scher, radiologist, for their knowledge, dedication and caring as they helped me to journey through this illness. I thank the Carol G. Simon Cancer at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey for being a state-of-the-art facility with a gifted staff offering traditional and alternative techniques and support to patients fighting cancer. The support groups helped me cope with emotional, appearance and post treatment issues…thank you Jean Marie Rosone for all you do. I thank my husband, Art, and my sons, Josh and Joel for their care as I dealt with chemo and radiation and all the ups and down associated with it. And, and I cannot forget my friends who gave gentle hugs, provided meals and rides and laughter.

I also have to thank all the supporters of Sing a Rainbow….the wonderful performers who have donated time and talent to offer wonderful evening of music; my volunteers without whom the many tasks associated with this event couldn't happen; the many vendors who made up our Rainbow Boutique and who, with other generous donors, provided a multitude of door prize; I thank business and private supporters who choose to be anonymous; and I thank all of you who attend this event along with my incredible Sing a Rainbow Volunteer Team.
Unfortunately, not everyone who is a cancer patient is a survivor. That is why I am counting on you to come out on Saturday, May 4, 2013. We need to continue cancer education, research and funding. We need to continue to provide the patient/family support to assist those affected by cancer to journey toward renewed health. Your presence is our way of saying there is hope and that there will one day be a cure. Be part of the cure.

With gratitude,

Sandy Rosenfield

The Powerful Healing Effects of Drumming:

“Drumming emphasizes self-expression, teaches how to rebuild emotional health, and addresses issues of violence and conflict through expression and integration of emotions,” says Music educator Ed Mikenas. “Each person in a drum circle is expressing themselves through his or her drum and listening to the other drums at the same time.” “Everyone is speaking, everyone is heard, and each person’s sound is an essential part of the whole.” “Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study with 30 depressed people over 80 years of age and found that participants in a weekly music therapy group were less anxious, less distressed and had higher self-esteem (Friedman, Healing Power of the Drum, 1994). Drumming with others can help establish community bonds and allow people to connect together on a level that does not require awkward small talk or allow other insecurities to surface that can inhibit interaction with new people.”

Artist Information:

Frank Pavese
FRANK PAVESE is originally from Ramsey, New Jersey. He is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan and the William Paterson University of New Jersey where he is a faculty member. He credits his studies with Bulgarian pianist Elka Gurova Kirkpatrick as having had the greatest influence upon him. His professional debut was at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. The New York Times described him as a pianist with "Energy and Commitment" and called his playing "persuasive and especially sonorous." He first came to the attention of the European musical world after acclaimed concerts at London's Wigmore Hall and the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh. The press and public followed his career with great interest as he gave his Viennese debut in the Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein in 1990 and toured Hungary.

The following years have included return engagements to Vienna, a third tour of Hungary presented by the National Philharmonic, tours of France and Poland and appearances on Hungarian State Radio and Polish National Television. Orchestral appearances have included a tour of Poland where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Olsztyn Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Piotr Borkowski.

As founder and director of the Hindemithon festival (now in it's 10th season) at WPUNJ, celebrating the life and works of composer Paul Hindemith, Pavese received high critical acclaim for his performance of Ludus Tonalis. Classical New Jersey wrote- "Pavese played the enormous work with an ease which was in itself awesome, given the obvious difficulties of the music. Because the composer wrote fugue subjects which were easily identified through their contours and character, the pianist went for the music and not the didacticism, understanding well that there was no need to underline the obvious. Technical and musical difficulties abound in the course of the hour, and Pavese met them all with a full understanding of the score and what Hindemith had set out to accomplish. It was one of the most impressive solo piano performances of a single work I have heard in a long time."

In 2010, Pavese performed recitals of the works of Samuel Barber on tour in honor of the composer's centennial celebration. He concertizes every year in Europe and this year makes his first Pacific tour performing in Guam and Japan.

Alan Weinstein
Alan Weinstein, Assistant Professor of Cello and Bass at Virginia Tech, holds degrees in music performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music. His principal teachers include Steven Doane, Robert Sylvester, Timothy Eddy and chamber music studies with the Cleveland Quartet, Menachem Pressler, Walter Trampler, and Eugene Lehner.

Mr. Weinstein is a founding member of the Kandinsky Trio, winner of national awards such as the Chamber Music America Residency Award. Mr. Weinstein has performed throughout North America and Europe in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Miller Theatre, Spivey Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Edinbrough Fringe Festival and the Arnoff Center. He frequently collaborates with internationally acclaimed artists including Dawn Upshaw, Ida Kavafian, Theodore Bikel and Gunther Schuller.

He has appeared on television and radio broadcasts throughout the United States and Canada, including the McNeil/Lehrer Report, WNYC, and Performance Today on National Public Radio. Mr. Weinstein has served as a faculty member at the Hindemith Institute in Blonay, Switzerland, InterHarmony International Music Festival in Arcidosso, Italy, and has given over 200 master classes at institutions including Penn State, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and Vanderbilt University. He has performed with the Portland String Quartet, the Rochester Philharmonic and served as principal cellist of the Eastman/Dryden Orchestra.

His dedication to new music has led him to premiere compositions by artists such as Mike Reid (“Tales of Appalachia” performed in over 150 cities), John D'Earth, Gunther Schuller, and Richard Danielpour. Along with the Kandinsky Trio, he is the recipient of an NEA Meet the Composer Award. His jazz collaborations have included performances with Larry Coryell, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Dave Samuels, and as a harmonica player with Ray Charles.

Virginia Tech has awarded Mr. Weinstein the Alumni Teaching Award and inducted him into the Academy of Teaching Excellence. He has also been the recipient of the Sturm Award for Faculty Excellence in the Creative Arts and the Certificate of Teaching Excellence Award. He has recorded for Arabesque Records, OmniTone and the Brioso labels and plays a cello attributed to Albani circa 1680.
